"Groovin' with DGFree" is a test snippet of something I'm working on to try out DGFree, the free version of DirectGuitar from www.pettinghouse.com. I'm looking for a decent sounding guitar for use while composing, which I will likely replace later by recording real guitar. I like the main riff in this and may use it in a song. I don't know if it will be 12-bar blues like the clip. (Update Aug 2010, I've been using Prominy SC Electric Guitar for about a year. prominy.com)
Everything else (Update Aug 2010, everything but several newer test snippets) is currently from an old cassette tape of music I wrote 20 years ago or more. I will comment on a few.
1986 CX5M+CZ230-S - "Maelstrom"
This was for a contest by CASIO when I was at Berklee. I hate the "cello solo" in the middle but oh well, that's what I get for rushing to beat a deadline.
1986 CX5M+Prophet2000 - "Dream Sequence"
Very long and weird. Was inspired by a sound on the keyboard.
1987 drum machine+CZ101+voice - answering machine rap
At one point I wanted to program drum machines for a little extra money. I made this rap for my answering machine.
1987 misc equipment - stupid contest entry, tried to throw in everything but the kitchen sink
I hate how this came out overall but like some individual sections. It was something I threw together for a contest and I tried to put too much in it.
1988 4-track rock song, STUPID STUPID falsetto vocals - "Decision"
This song embarrasses me for two reasons:
1. STUPID falsetto. I wanted a high voice and couldn't find a singer so I did it myself. I DON'T SING LIKE THAT. It was a one time thing.
2. "Christian" lyrics. Hey, it's what I was at the time so I guess I shouldn't be embarrassed. I think they're written well, but I would totally rewrite then if I recorded this song again.
1989 CX5M - funky
NO samples. ALL CX5M, 4-op FM synthesis. I mention this because by this time I'd become pretty good at programming this synth and had some decent sounds. The kick, snare, hihat, bass, and some brass sounds are my own. For brass I like to track each part individually with separate pitch bend/portamento/etc so it doesn't sound so much like keyboard.
